Confused....Need Help On AS9100 | 7 August, 2008

Can A Company or Electronic Manufacturing Company go for AS9100 certification if the Quality Policy states that we only meet IPC Class 2 Standard? I'm just very confused for I know AS9100 is an Aerospace Quality System and must meet IPC Class 3.

this is the statement in the Quality Manual...

"[COMPANY NAME] meets the IPC 610, Class 2 acceptability and J-Std-001 soldering standards, unless otherwise specified by customer."

AS9100

The AS9100 standard contains all elements of the ISO 9001:2000 standard, including its corresponding guidelines and ....specific items have been added to the AS9100 standard to support the unique quality and reliability needs of the aerospace industry.

Is the Quality Manual statement short of achieving the AS9100? Is the clause "unless otherwise specified by customer" enough to coover for the AS9100's quality and reliability needed for the aerospace industry?

We expect aerospace to be IPC-A-610, Class 3 and J-STD-001, Class 3.

The above quality statement stecifies: * "IPC 610, Class 2 acceptability." This is unclear. Should this be "IPC-A-610, Class 2 acceptability?" * No class for J-STD-001. Should we assume this is Class 2 also? * "... unless otherwise specified by customer." We assume Class 2 is their standard process. We'd guess that they routinely do Class 2 work and if a customer requests it, they could assemble to Class 1. We can't imagine a plant that is geared for Class 2 work being able to re-engineer to do Class 3 work [without substantial pain].

What does this supplier say?

THANKS.

I was told that the verbage "unless otherwise specified by customer" should be enough to cover for Class 3....hmmmm

also i was told that it was written so because the company's major customers are in Class 2 products that's why it has to emphasize Class 2...
