Hi,

I don't want to sound too negative here, because this forums been an incredibly help over the years, however does anyone else think it's a bit ugly.

Perhaps it's just me, but it has not really changed over the years I have been using it, and it could be cleaned up a little, and be a bit faster to bring up the main index of posts.

www.phpbb.com for example is quite a nice system, although i don't know how the add's would be included.

I just thought it would be worth commenting on. However I don't want to sound negative, because this forum has been so useful to me over the years. I guess its like asking your kids to clean up their rooms. You don't want to kick them out of the house, but would just like the environment a little nicer!

Amen. With the number of ads on here it must be generating revenue. Time to put some $$$ back in and improve this site. Not that it sucks, but it could be better. At least put it on a faster server.

We'd appeciate any other feedback, suggestions and/or functionality requests you have.

I agree with one of the previous posters that phpbb is a great forum software. Tons of features and it's easy to manage. I also believe that we are very fortunate to have this free forum. I've grumbled under my breath a few times about the load times but its not that big of a concern to me.

Hi,

I guess that's the problem, I really appreciate the forum itself, but just wonder if some things can be done to improve it, as it's been similar for years now, while the rest of the web keeps getting better and better.

It's really cool to hear you guys are thinking about it, and the idea of adding pictures is a really good one, as I know a lot of people in the past have wanted to show what they are talking about.

Imagine having images of machines and other things people are talking about in with the text, it would be really nice, as a lot of the time I have never seen the machines that are being talked about.

I am from a design background, so I guess the visual look of things is really important, however the initial load of the messages has always been slow. I guess it's dynamically building the page before sending it?

However like everyone, I am not criticizing the forum, and I would have been totally lost without it. It's been the one way to talk to other people about SMT production and the people here have been instrumental in guiding my knowledge. I am CEO of my company, and have never had the advantage of training under someone in a large production situation, however what I have learnt here has been amazing. Everyone here has been my mentor.

My requests for the forum would be nice clean design, as well as fast load times. I could help somewhat with a design of a template for the forums if that would be helpful, as we have designers in house. Let me know if we can help.

Regards,

Grant

This should be posted on the SMTnet Site Support section. I'm not sure the owners of this site will see this here.

Hi,

Roland Girouard replied above and mentioned they were already meeting to talk about some possible revisions to the site, so I think they have already seen the thread ok.

Roland

It's nice that Peter is considering improving the site.

Things we'd like to see improved on SMTnet.com are: * SEARCH that works effectively. [We can't find postings that we've made. AND we know the key words. So, it must be painful for others trying to search without inside information.] * Advertising on the right margin should be limited to 2 1/4 inches. [Advertising on the main forum page is a bit piggy on the right border. It claims 4 inches. It's more reasonable on the threads, where it's 2+ inched.]

We're not into the whole metro-thing of needs a hip looking site. It looks fine. Make it work better and faster.

One of the coolest things I've seen in a forum is a preview of the post that you get by holding your cursor over the post title. The only place I've seen it is here:

Probably asking a bit much, but it's worth a shot.
